Baby Bike Trailers
Bike trailers are very popular for moms and dads who are avid bikers. Even before your baby is big enough to put in a seat on your bike, he can ride in a baby bike trailer.
Bike trailers attach to the back of your bike and can be zipped to completely cover baby with a breathable mesh. You can simply strap baby’s infant car seat right in the trailer. When children are a bit older, they can sit in the trailer without a car seat. All baby bike trailers come with five point harnesses for buckling babies or toddlers inside, and most have a full roll cage. Most will seat one or two children.
Bike trailers have some advantages over bike seats. The first is that they do not tip over if you take a spill on your bike. In addition, they also usually provide storage space; most have at least enough storage to carry your diaper bag. Finally, bike trailers can be used with newborns in an infant seat, while bike seats require that baby be able to sit up.
However, there are some safety issues associated with using bike trailers. The first is that they provide little protection in the event of an accident with a car. However, because they’re so low to the ground, children don’t fall very far if the bike trailer tips over. Secondly, because they are so low to the ground, a driver may be able to see your bike, but may not necessarily see the trailer behind it. Most experts recommend that you not use a bike trailer for riding in the city or other areas where there is a lot of motor vehicle traffic. Following are some features to look for if you’re considering purchasing an infant bike trailer.
• Safety –This is the most important issue to consider. Your infant bike trailer should meet all the American Safety and Testing Materials standards. In addition, choose a bike trailer in a color that is highly visible and one with safety straps that are difficult for a toddler to unfasten. Make certain that the trailer has a full roll cage and that it hitches easily and securely to your bike.
• Features – Shop around to find the features you need. Do you need space for more than one child? Do you need storage space?
• Budget – Bike trailers are not inexpensive. Baby bike trailers that hold more than one child are more expensive than those for one child. Do your research and scope out the trailers with the highest safety ratings first. Then, from these trailers, choose the one that best meets your feature requirements and budget.
