Baby Bike Seats

Parents who love to cycle will no doubt want to take their children along for the right. There are basically two ways to take your child cycling with you. One is bike trailer and the other a bike seat.

Bike seats are more popular for older children, while trailers are typically more useful for babies. However, biking with an infant can be dangerous regardless of the method you choose. In fact, in many states it is illegal to take a baby under one year of age in a bike trailer or a baby bike seat. Even if it is legal in your state, you should think long and hard about the idea. All experts in the field of injury prevention agree that babies should not be taken cycling before they’re one year old. Most recommend that parents wait until they’re children are at least two to take them along.

When you’re ready to buy an infant bike seat for your child, there are basically two types from which to choose:

Rear-Mounted Bike Seats

Many cyclists feel safer with their children behind them. on the bike. Rear mounted seats are available in larger sizes and can have higher backs, which gives greater support and protection. However, using a rear mounted seat makes the bike far less stable because there’s a lot of extra weight on the back. This makes it much easier for the bike to tip over.

Front-Mounted Bike Seats

Having your child right in front of you allows you to talk to him or her while you ride. But, this also puts the child in the direct path of a head-on collision and can make steering awkward and more difficult. Some parents feel safer in this sort of bike seat because their child is closer to them.
Regardless of the type of seat you choose, be aware of the following safety guidelines.
• You and your child must both wear a helmet.
• Keep a moderate pace; the extra weight on your bike will make it less stable and extra speed will only exacerbate the problem. Be especially careful on rough terrain as this also increases your risk of falling.
• Most experts recommend that only the most experienced cyclists ride with their children on board.
• Never take a child with you on your bike unless he is at least one year old and can hold his head unsupported.
