Double Strollers

Many people associate the idea of a double stroller with having twins. And, of course, owning a double stroller is an absolute must if you have twins, but they’re great for moms with an infant and a toddler, too. It’s very common to have two children of “stroller riding age” at the same time.

You might choose double strollers a bit differently if you have an infant and a toddler than you would for a set of twins. For example, some strollers have a spot in front for a baby with a spot in back for an older kid to stand up or sit on a platform. This is great for a mom with a baby and toddler, since these strollers will usually accommodate your car seat for the infant, and they give your toddler a bit more freedom. However, they would not work at all for a family with a set of infant twins.

One important thing to keep in mind when shopping for a double stroller is the size of the stroller. Many double strollers are very wide, particularly the ones designed for the children to sit side by side. They can be very difficult to maneuver through doors, particularly if you’re alone. (Think those heavy doors at department stores.) In addition, some are very heavy, which makes it even more difficult when you’re alone with your children. Whether you’re choosing a stroller for twins or for an infant and a toddler, choose one you can maneuver. Most parents find strollers configured so that one child sits behind the other, rather than beside him, easier to use.

You can also find double jogger strollers, which are great for moms who run or walk for exercise. Jogging strollers have larger, sturdier wheels to help them manage rough terrain and they are better balanced for running. Jogging strollers can be a bit pricey; double jogger strollers are even more expensive. But for many women who exercise outdoors, they’re an absolute must.

If you’re on a budget, you can consider using stroller clips to attach two single strollers together side by side. This works best with umbrella strollers or other lightweight strollers. Many parents find this to be a very convenient alternative because you can separate the two strollers when you only have one child with you. This alternative also may give you the problem of having a stroller too wide for many doors, since the only way to attach the strollers together is to put them side by side.
