Children Books
If you’re looking for a great gift for a kid, you can’t go wrong with a book. Most young children love being read to and can develop a lifelong love of reading if parents are faithful in reading regularly. One of the keys to ensuring that having a bedtime story is always a welcome activity for both parent and child is having a good library at home.
So, any time you can add to the library of a child with the gift of a book, it’s sure to be appreciated. And, there are literally thousands of books for kids out there, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one to give. Children’s books can be found at department stores, discount stores, toy store and, of course, book stores.
When deciding on the right book to choose, consider a few things:
• The age of the child
• The child’s interests
• Whether the book is intended for the child to read himself or for a parent to read to him.
From infancy, babies will respond to being read to. Colorful board books with interactive flaps and textures will keep baby fascinated while mom reads. These books are used to stimulate cognitive development as well as simple things like beginning color, shape and object recognition.
Toddlers will love being read to but will also love looking at books themselves. Board books work well for toddlers too, because they’re sturdy. But at this age, toddlers can begin to tell you about the objects in the book rather than you doing all the reading to them.
School age children are beginning to read themselves, but will still enjoy being read to by someone else. But, the books will be different. Choose books at the appropriate child reading level for the child to read himself. However, you can choose more difficult stories with more complicated story lines for parents to read aloud with these young leaders. These more complex stories will give parents the opportunity to ask questions to help develop reading comprehension.
As children get into tween and teen years, they’ll do the all the reading themselves. At this age it’s really important to understand their interests when choosing a book. Most kids this age love to read something they’re interested in, but have no interest in reading about a subject they consider mundane.
Books are always a great gift. Choose your children’s books with care and you’re sure to bring a smile to a child’s face!
