Breastfeeding

The breast versus bottle controversy is one that has raged for years. Many years ago, breastfeeding was the norm, in large part for economic reasons. Breast milk is, of course, free, and saving a lot of money over bottle feeding. When most of today’s moms were babies, however, bottle feeding was very popular. Many women were in the workforce, and found bottle feeding to be simpler when working.

Today, breastfeeding is again very popular. This time many women choose to breastfeed because science has shown us the many significant health benefits that breast feeding provides for your baby. Here are some of the many advantages to breastfeeding for your baby.

• Breast milk contains nutrients that help your child’s brain develop optimally. These nutrients cannot be duplicated in formula.
• Breastfeeding protects your child from illnesses because they are protected by your immune system, which is much more developed.
• Breast milk is very well tolerated by babies, so it doesn’t cause an upset tummy or other gastric problem.
• Breastfed babies are less likely to be overweight.

• Breastfed babies are less likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

• Breastfed babies have healthier teeth.

• Breastfed babies show a stronger response to their immunizations.

In addition to the direct benefits to baby’s health, there are other benefits to breastfeeding. These include:

• Women who breastfeed have a lower risk for many serious illnesses, including breast cancer and uterine cancer.
• Women who are breastfeeding typically lose their pregnancy weight more quickly and more easily.
• Women who are breastfeeding often put off their fertility during the time they’re nursing, reducing the need for artificial birth control.
• Breastfeeding saves a family approximately $1200 per year over the cost of feeding formula.
• Breastfeeding means a healthier baby, thus fewer trips to the doctor and fewer medical expenses.
• Breastfeeding is more ecologically friendly because no materials are used.

So, as you can see, there are many advantages to breastfeeding your baby, and most doctors recommend that mothers give it a try. Because of this, most hospitals and many obstetric offices employ lactation consultants to help mothers learn breastfeeding techniques. While breastfeeding is perfectly natural, it does not always come automatically to mother or baby. Breast feeding problems are common, and lactation consultants can provide a wealth of assistance to mothers, easing the transition into nursing.

If you’re expecting, give serious thought to breastfeeding your baby. It can be a very rewarding emotional experience in addition to getting your baby off to the healthiest start.
