Baby Formula

If you’ve wandered down the baby supply aisle at your grocer, you’ve no doubt realized that there are many types of baby formulas. You may be wondering how you’ll ever decide on the right formula to feed your little one.

If you start feeding infant formula from the very beginning, the formula your baby will be given in the hospital will likely be a pre-mixed milk based formula in disposable bottles. This is likely the brand that your pediatrician recommends and is one that will work well for most babies. You may be able to use this same formula for your child’s entire first year of life with no issues.

If you notice that your baby cries significantly after eating, or has vomiting or diarrhea, this may mean that he is allergic to the baby formula. He may need soy or another special formula blend. Contact your pediatrician if you notice these symptoms. Your pediatrician will help you find the right formula for your baby. It may take several tries, but you’ll be able to locate a type that works well for your little one.

You’ll also have to decide whether you want pre-mixed, liquid concentrate or powdered formula. Pre-mixed formulas come in cans and don’t have to be diluted. Liquid concentrates need to have water added, as does powdered. Pre-mixed is the most expensive and the most convenient. Powdered is the least expensive. Premixed formulas and liquid concentrates also spoil more quickly than powdered formula, which typically has a shelf life of about two weeks from the time you open the can.

Many moms mix and match, using the less expensive powdered formula at home, but buying the premixed variety when traveling. Which every type of formula you choose, be certain to follow the mixing directions carefully. If you choose powdered formula, look for the measured containers at your baby gear store. These round containers have several compartments for holding powdered formula. When you plan to be out for the day, you can measure your powdered formula at home, putting one serving in each compartment. Then, when it comes time to mix the formula you have a pre-measured amount at hand.

When you’re bottle feeding, you must also be diligent about sterilizing your bottles. Keeping the feeding equipment sterile is critical to protecting your baby’s health, when he’s very young. Bottles and nipples must be sterilized before first use, and some must be sterilized regularly thereafter. Read the sterilization instructions on your bottles carefully and follow them closely.

Bottle feeding takes some preparation and some decision making. However, you’ll soon find that you have all the products that you need to make bottle feeding a success, and you’ll have a happy and well fed baby.
