First Birthday

Most parents anticipate their child’s first birthday with great anticipation. But, it’s important to keep in mind that baby is not really “party ready” at this age, so it’s wise to keep the festivities a bit low key.

Many babies are easily frightened at this age and are often fearful of strangers. So, having a huge party with 50 of your closest friends will probably not please the guest of honor.

Instead, consider having a small party, inviting just the closest family and friends. Keep the party short – about one hour is as much as baby will be up for. Use brightly colored decorations to attract your little one’s attention, and provide a special hat for baby to wear. If baby has a favorite character, like Clifford the big red dog or Elmo from Sesame Street, find plates and other party supplies in those themes. Your local party stores will have many choices for babies first birthday party supplies.

Food can be very simple for a baby’s first birthday party. Be sure to include a few of your baby’s favorite food items, even if they’re not appealing to the adults. Sliced bananas, strawberries and other fruits along with simple cookies like animal crackers will keep baby happy.

When it comes to birthday cake, you might want to purchase baby her own small cake and then a larger one to feed your guests. This way, if baby plants her face in her cake you still have one intact to cut for guests. To reduce the amount of sugar in baby’s cake, ask the bakery to frost the cake with a whipped cream based frosting rather than a sugar and butter based one. And, don’t expect baby to blow out a candle. In fact, the danger of her burning herself is great enough that you’re better off just to sing “Happy Birthday” and skip the candle.

You don’t need any special activities for a first birthday party. Cut the cake, take lots of pictures and then let baby open her presents. Keep in mind that she’ll likely be more interested in the boxes, ribbons and paper than the gifts inside! After these activities and lots of pictures are completed, baby will likely have had enough. Letting the party go on too long is a sure way to end up with a cranky baby!

Baby’s first birthday party is a moment to remember! Plan the party wisely and everyone, including the birthday baby, is sure to have a great time!
