Diaper Rash Cream
Diaper rash can make your baby miserable. You’ll find that some babies are simply more prone to diaper rash than others, and if your baby is prone to diaper rash you’ll have to keep on top of the problem. The best way to do this is to change baby frequently use diaper rash cream at every diaper change. Diaper rash is caused by the skin being constantly exposed to wetness, so changing frequently can prevent the problem. Most of the diaper rash ointments on the market are designed simply to protect your baby’s skin from wetness, so they are great at preventing diaper rash.
There are many great diaper rash creams on the market. The most important ingredient is typically zinc oxide, as it creates a great barrier to wetness. Many parents, however, find that they have good results simply using petroleum jelly on baby’s bottom. I recommend trying several different brands; the best diaper rash cream is the one that works for your baby.
But, what if your baby already has a terrible case of diaper rash? If this is the case, you may need something a little more aggressive, since most of the traditional ointments are best at preventing diaper rash, not curing it. Here are some treatments you can try to get rid of a case of diaper rash.
• Oatmeal Baths – Use one of the oatmeal bath products on the market that are made especially for baby. Let baby soak in the bath for a few minutes. Then dry his bottom well, and apply a diaper rash cream.
• Maalox - Put some liquid Maalox on a cotton ball and apply to baby’s bottom, and let dry before diapering. Don’t use the mint flavor, as it will burn baby’s bottom and use this bottle of Maalox only for diaper rash.
• Homemade Diaper Rash Cream – Mix 3 parts zinc oxide or regular diaper rash cream with one part cornstarch and one part hydrocortisone cream. Check with your pediatrician before using this mixture, as hydrocortisone is not usually recommended for children under the age of two. This concoction worked like a charm on my daughter, who was very susceptible to diaper rash.
If you’re still unable to get rid of the rash, see your doctor. However, most babies should respond with a little persistence. Then, be sure to change diapers frequently and use diaper rash cream to avoid the rash coming back.
