Portable Cribs
If you plan to spend some time on the road with your baby, having a portable crib can be a big help. Portable cribs fold and carry easily, yet provide your baby with a comfortable and familiar place to sleep, no matter where you are. Having a portable crib can really take the worry out of taking a baby to a hotel, where they may or may not have a crib for you to use, and out of visiting relatives and friends who don’t have a crib in their home.
Nearly every major manufacturer of baby products makes a portable baby crib, so you’ll have no trouble finding one. However, it is wise to do some research before you buy.
First, take a look at the portable crib recall notices on the Internet. Several models of portable cribs have been recalled due to fatal accidents in recent years. These models should have been pulled off the shelf and replaced with safer models, or have had extra safety equipment added. However, you should know what to look for to ensure that you don’t inadvertently buy an unsafe crib. Because of these recalls, I would advise against buying a used portable crib, unless you’re absolutely certain that it has not been recalled.
Secondly, check the crib for safety. Because portable cribs are designed to fold up for travel, you’ll find lots of hinges. Be sure they’re sturdy enough to stay put when the crib is opened up and that they aren’t likely to trap little fingers. Be sure that the webbing on the sides is safe for fingers and toes. Be sure that the crib stands at least 22 inches high from the floor to prevent your child climbing out.
Next, think about comfort. Some portable cribs have more padding on the mattress than others; so feel the mattresses to ensure that you choose the most comfortable. Think about your own comfort when transporting the portable crib, too. Some are larger and more cumbersome than others. Some come with wheels that allow you to pull the crib along behind you when it’s folded. These are great if you’re traveling through the airport. You should give some thought to size, as well. The larger the crib, the longer your child can use it. However the larger the crib the more difficult it will be to transport and the more space it will use in your vehicle. So, try to strike a balance in size.
A portable crib can be a very useful item for traveling. Shop wisely and find the crib that’s right for your family.
