Foam Mattresses

If you’re selecting a mattress for your child’s crib or toddler bed, one of your options will be a foam mattress. Foam mattresses are, in fact, the most popular mattress choice for cribs. Foam crib mattresses are very popular for cribs because they are less expensive than coil mattresses and yet are just a firm and durable as coil mattresses.

Another advantage to a foam mattress over a coil mattress for your baby’s crib is the weight. Foam mattresses are significantly lighter than coil mattresses. While weight is not particularly important in an adult mattress, it is very important when changing wet crib sheets in the middle of the night. In most cases, the easiest way to change crib sheets is by lifting the mattress all the way, or nearly all the way, out of the crib. So, a lightweight foam mattress makes this late night chore far easier.

When choosing a foam mattress, you should select one that is firm to the touch. Because babies may not have the strength to pull their heads out of a too soft dent in a mattress, you need a firm mattress for safety. In addition to firmness, look for the density of your mattress. The best foam mattresses are high-density, about 1.5 pounds per cubic foot. However, you may have trouble determining the density of a mattress just by looking at the packaging. You may need to check with the manufacturer via their website to get the exact density.

If you’re selecting a bed for an older child, you may choose a coil mattress so that it lasts longer as your child grows. However, if you like the feel of a foam mattress, you could use a memory foam mattress topper on top of a coil mattress. Memory foam has a wonderful feel to it, and makes your regular mattress much more comfortable and soft. Topping coil mattresses with memory foam mattress toppers is a great way to have the stability and durability of a coil mattress with the softness and comfort of memory foam.

When purchasing a mattress for an older child, you should purchase the best quality you can afford. Unlike your crib mattress, which your child will only sleep on for about 3 years, the next mattress you purchase for your child should be expected to last throughout his childhood. So, it’s wise to shop around and find the best mattress for the money.
