Breast Pads

If you’re breast feeding or have recently had breast surgery, make certain that you have some breast pads on hand. Breast pads come in many varieties and have many uses. Some of the situations where breast pads can come in handy include:

When nursing – Breast pads can absorb milk that leaks from your breasts between feedings, keeping your clothes and bra dry. They prevent that most embarrassing “wet shirt” situation that can occur if you happen to hear a baby cry while you’re out shopping!

After breast surgery – If you’ve recently had breast surgery, a breast pad may help keep incisions dry and comfortable. Incisions that are kept dry heal faster and are less likely to develop infections.

When breasts are sore – If you’re new to nursing, your nipples may become very sore. Wearing a breast pad can provide a soft layer between your nipple and your bra, keeping your sore breasts more comfortable and less irritated.

Breast pads come in several different varieties, so that you can choose the type that works best for you. The two most common include:

Washable breast pads – These breast pads are typically made from cotton and can be laundered. These save money over disposable pads and are great for every day use at home. You can simply throw them in the washing machine and dryer for cleaning. Be sure to choose pads that are 100% cotton to ensure good airflow around your breasts.

Disposable breast pads – Disposable breast feeding pads are great when you’re away from home. Keep a few pairs tucked into your diaper bag so that you can duck into a restroom and change quickly whenever your breasts feel damp. You can simply throw the wet pads in the garbage. These cost a bit more overall than washable pads, but are a lifesaver when you’re away from home. These pads should also be 100% cotton or all paper. Avoid breast pads with a plastic liner that does not breathe, as these impede air flow to your breasts.

Many manufacturers of breast feeding accessories make breast pads. You’ll likely find that larger breast pads work better under your clothes, as they will slip around less. You might also look for pads with an adhesive backing. These are much less likely to slip around inside your bra.

Whatever type of breast pad you choose; be sure to use them consistently if you have breast leakage. Your breasts should be kept very dry in order to prevent nipple infections. In addition, your nipples will be less sore if they’re kept dry. So, be sure to change those breast pads regularly, to stay nice and dry.
